Struggle to relax and fall asleep?

When I switch off my bedside light I often seem to switch on a light in my brain and my mind gets totally over active. This is so frustrating when you know you need a good night's sleep.

I came across this breathing technique by Dr Andrew Weil, which I have been using for the last month or so and have found it to be very effective. Not many of us breathe as deeply as we should - to the lower part of the diaphragm, expanding and deflating completely. Done correctly, this sends a message to the brain to slow down.

Breathing Technique:

  • Exhale through your mouth making a "whoosh" sound.
  • Breathe in slowly and deeply for the count of 4, through your nose with your mouth closed.
  • Hold for the count of 7
  • Breathe out slowly and completely exhale through your mouth making a "whoosh" sound for the count of 8 .

Repeat this 4 times.

By sitting up with a straight back, this technique can also be used to de-stress and relax during the day.
The more you use this technique the more you master it and it's effectiveness.
